In 1938 Dave Packard quit his job at GE in Schenectady, New York and headed west to Palo Alto, California. In Palo Alto, Packard and his old friend Bill Hewlett set up shop in a small garage and formed a new company, Hewlett Packard. Armed with used tools and a lot of ambition, the Hewlett Packard invented their first successful product, an audio oscillator. The was machine designed for checking audio-equipment. Among their first customers was Walt Disney, who needed the device to check the sound systems in movie houses. Today the garage is a historic landmark Palo Alto and is recognized as the birthplace of Silicon Valley.

Hewlett Packard (HP) went on to develop to develop video cameras, calculators, desktops, palmtops, and laptops. In 1984 HP released the first commercially successful laser jet printer and just a few years later the first laser jet desktop machines. Over time, HP went onto develop many of the most advanced office printer and copying systems.
