In 1938 Dave Packard quit his job at GE in Schenectady, New York and headed west to Palo Alto, California. In Palo Alto, Packard and his old friend Bill Hewlett set up shop in a small garage and formed a new company, Hewlett Packard. In 1984 HP released the first commercially successful laser jet printer and just a few years later the first laser jet desktop machines.
